National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art, Student Cupola Contest,
2017-2019
I stewarded this journeyman competition at two consecutive National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and Practices as a member of the conference’s steering committee. This competition is meant to test the abilities of the student artists, and for them to safely demonstrate their skills in designing, building and running a furnace, making and pouring all the competition molds on a national stage. Furnaces (cupolas or cupollettes) must have 10 inch inside diameter and be operated entirely by student teams in order to qualify. Over the course of 4 years my co-chair and I shepherded nearly 300 students through this rite of traditional metal working.
